Soho Farmhouse – A stylish countryside wedding venue

Levels of excitement were rather high in anticipation of looking around this wonderful new addition to the Soho House Group – Soho Farmhouse, near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire. Looking around venues is pretty important to a wedding and event planner, especially ones that look like Soho Farmhouse and when you’ve heard incredible things, you know something special is in store.

Boots and coats loaded in the car (well it had been raining heavily and we are off into the country! Being a farm girl myself, this is kind of like a standard Sunday outfit – Dubarrys and wax jacket – all prepared), Hannah and I set off on the hour trip to the Farmhouse. A pleasant journey and not too far from the M40, we meandered round a few country lanes and once the signpost had been spotted, drove off down a track towards our destination.

Welcomed by two friendly ‘gate keepers’ at the Gatehouse, we drove through and parked up. Only electric vehicles are allowed on site – all part of keeping it sustainable and eco-friendly – so we were taken up to the main site in an electric milk van. Honestly, these are too cute. A beautiful duck egg blue/green (which is throughout the Farmhouse site) little milk van that are used to transport guests around. Genius! I seriously want one, not that I would get far, but they are rather cute and vintage. Right up my street!

Dropped off at reception by the driver/porter, we were handed a map and given directions about where everything was located. You may wonder, is a map necessary…well…yes! The site is basically a mini village. The main yard and barns are located in the centre with a farmshop and deli, this then surrounded by the two big event barns and the stables (I lingered far too long here and completely fell for a beautiful horse called Gimley…genuinely want him!) where you can ride and hack out – love that! On the other side of the yard were the Cowshed Spa, the gym, pool and sports/activities area. Some areas were still being built, but once everything has been completed, this place is going to have a serious WOW factor. Sign me up a membership now! Cabins and two stunning farmhouses surround the site on the 100 acres or so of land, each completely spacious and beautifully and thoughtfully decorated in a style that will leave you quite breath-taken and longing to come back again.

The two main event barns are large and spacious and although the ceremony barn was currently set up as a temporary gym, you could really see the potential it has and the wonderful views. We went into styling mode, with all the wonderful things you could do – idea overload! The second barn, the Barwell Barn, more of the reception space, had a meeting in, but you could see the beautiful space inside and as we wandered round towards the back, the terrace behind was rather special. Wonderful views overlooking the marquee lawn, with a lovely gazebo type building and plenty of tables and chairs, ideal for a reception space outside and a great space for any event or corporate meeting breaks.

The staff here are beyond friendly and helpful, relaxed, but professional. We sat down to soak up the atmosphere in the Main Barn and restaurant area and chose a comfy seat outside in the yard. The smell of a wood burner and that lovely smoky scent filled the air – kind of perfect on an autumnal day. Blankets and cushions abound, it creates quite the cosy and romantic space. A fresh loaf and yummy butter were served with our coffees and they were delicious! The menu was incredibly tempting and had some fresh, seasonal dishes on. It took a lot for us not to order, but luncheon elsewhere was awaiting us! I really didn’t want to leave, but that we had to do. So we hopped aboard the milk van, I waved a goodbye to Gimley, promising to return very soon (and I really will!) and we made our way back to our car, full of wonderful thoughts and ideas of all the wonderful things you could do there.

Soho Farmhouse is really quite special, even when it’s still a little unfinished. But when everything is built and completed, this really will be the ultimate country escape, bringing the typical Soho House style and service into the countryside! I think this would make a wonderful event space and corporate break venue and the real ultimate country wedding venue. With two beautiful barns, ample outside space and copious accommodation, this could be YOUR venue and in my humble opinion, it really would be a pretty special place to get married! Yes, I’m biased as I love an old style farmhouse and farmyard, but these are pretty wow and I would love to plan a wedding for a couple here, so if any of you are engaged and want a beautiful, stylish, unique and special place to wed, then take a look and get in touch with us at Goose & Berry. We would be delighted to help plan your wedding.

Falling for Fall

So it appears that Autumn is very much here and do you know what we are ok with that! After a busy Summer full of events and weddings, it’s time to recharge the batteries, start planning for next year and most of all get cosy!

Being born in October, I have a particular fondness for the Autumnal months and here’s a few reasons why we think this season is pretty ace and may have you all falling for fall.

1. Colours – All the rich hues and tones on the leaves surrounding us. The coppers, reds, oranges and rusts are super stunning.

2. Warm chunky knits – jumpers, cardigans, scarves – yes, we absolutely adore! Looking cosy, stylish and keeping us warm on these colder days.

3. Boots – Fashion led again, but so versatile. So many styles and keep our tootsies warm and dry.

4. Food – Of course! It’s only natural we would talk about food. And we love our Autumn/Winter menu – full of seasonal goodies – apples, pies, berries, soups, hearty, comfort food. Yums!

5. Nights In – Yes we love our nights out, but when September hits and Saturday night TV in the form of X Factor and Strictly return, we don’t mind cosying up and staying in.

6. Walks – The crunch of the leaves on the ground and the crisp, fresh air – perfection!

7. Blankets – Your winter wardrobe is out and about and the same applies for your home. Blankets return and it’s a full on snug fest.

8. Warm Drinks – A whole lot of yes please to Hot Chocolate and Mulled Wine.

9. Fireworks and Bonfires – Any excuse for fireworks to be honest! Toffee apples, marshmallows, standing around a bonfire, sparklers and cooing over fireworks.

10. Countdown to Christmas – Yes we said it! Sorry…The countdown however is on! Not many pressie buying days left I’m afraid!

See Autumn is a glorious season and we have full on fallen for fall (ok, my favourite one, so I’m biased) but the Goose&Berry girls love these months and we’re sure you might agree with some of the above! In fact we know you do!

Wedding Favours – A little Thank You

Sugared almond anyone? Cute and traditional but I think today’s weddings call out for something more personal, maybe a bit more fun and something that is maybe a touch more edible. I actually am quite partial to a sugared almond or two, but I know there is so much more on the market! Favours are those things that seem to cause everyone a little bit of bother and not everyone is sold on them. It’s lovely to give something as a gesture and if budget allows, but are they really necessary? Well I like to think they are quite cute and your guests are sure to love getting a little something…but maybe something a little more adventurous than sugared almonds! Shall we take a look at some ideas?

I have to say my personal fave kind of favour is of the edible variety. I could go into quite lengthy detail about these, but I will just highlight a few that I love. If you want to have a look at a few more ideas, then take a look at our blog on Edible favours here.

  • Homemade Jams and Chutneys – Ever popular and seriously yummy. Guests will love that you have made these yourself and it’s something personal for them to take home. Go with your favourite flavour and ‘spread the love’…sorry couldn’t help it!

  • Mint to be – Yes, another little play on words, but whether in cute little tins, or old fashioned sweetie bags, mints are a great little touch and are handy too…especially if you’ve chosen a garlic based main!

  • Infused Olive Oil – I adore this idea and especially if it’s a truffle infused oil (I’m obsessed and goes so well on a porcini mushroom risotto….I digress!) – you could infuse your own or buy. Maybe add a little tag with a recipe on to use it. Who doesn’t love a little something they can take home and use!

  • Tea – Let your love brew! Yes, for all of those tea lovers, how fab would it be to create your own special blend, package it up in cute little bags and give to your guests as favours. Served with a name tag and in a vintage china cup, these are delicious ideas for those whimsical and rustic weddings, and perfect if you are having an afternoon tea based meal. Yum!

  • Shots – A slightly more alcoholic approach and maybe only adult appropriate, but you could serve a shot of something in a personalised shot glass. Doubling up as a drink, name tag and gift. Liking this multi-tasking idea a lot.

So I think it’s fair to say food rules my heart, however as long as something is personal, thoughtful and pretty, it also gets my vote. There are several wonderful favour ideas that you can’t eat sadly, but are just as wonderful!

  • Candles – Personalised, scented or just a token of your appreciation, candles are a cute way of saying thanks.

  • Seeds – Whether on paper, in a little hessian bag, or in a jar – watch your love (and plants) grow! I love the fact that you can plant these and the products will remind guests of your wedding. Very sweet.

  • Mini flower pots and plants – So you’re impatient and you don’t like the seed idea – then why not give your guests a mini plant in a pot. You could even use these as name tags. A lovely little souvenir.

  • Handmade soap – Another little DIY task for you to try. Yes, soaps can be bought, but perhaps you could make your own, with your favourite scents and ingredients. The personal touch will be sure to leave your guests smelling sweet!

  • Vintiquities – Why not use vintage keys or compasses as your table plan and name tags? Guests can then keep these and take them home as a reminder of your magical day. And…some keys even double up as bottle openers –genius!

  • Lottery Tickets / Scratch cards – Hey! If one of your guests wins big, they are going to be so thankful!

  • Raffle Ticket – Fab if you have a festival/fete themed wedding. Give each guest a raffle ticket and either have a selection of goodies or one big prize to win. Make it an add on to the speeches and get everyone involved in the fun!

  • Perfume – Ok, so this might be one for the bigger budgets, but if you adore beautiful scents and perhaps you are having your own made up for the day, why not make up some mini bottles (altering the scent a little – you want to individual right!?) and give to your guests.  Maybe you want to get interactive. Set up a scent station, where guests can create their own signature scent to bottle up and take home. The sweet smell of love!

  • Handmade Thank you Notes – Actually one of the simplest and cutest ideas and mainly because it’s so personal. Write a little card or note for each of your guests, sharing a memory or thank you. Warning – may cause some blubbing –add a pack of tissues in for good measure!

So what do you think? Still want to stick to those sugared almonds or are you going to be a little bit more daring? Go on, give something different and try, your guest will most definitely thank you.
